“For the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has said: “You will be delivered by returning and resting; your strength will lie in quiet confidence.“

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭30:15‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

Christmas is only three days away. Many are scurrying around, feverishly preparing for the arrival of friends and family. Others may feel less joyful, more in dread of a day that holds bitter memories. Still others are grieving the loss of those who are no longer here. I usually am a jumbled bag of all the emotions, typically having to dart out of a wonderful family gathering to shed some tears over those I’m missing.

Rather than fretting and busyness, Heavenly Father calls us to a place of resting in Him. In that quiet, sacred space you will find your strength and confidence to take one more step, and then another.🚦

“By your endurance gain your lives.”

Luke 21:19

This year has been the hardest, best year of my professional career. I’ve had many days that my efforts to push through the combination of personal issues, health problems and whirlwind corporate change have failed miserably even when I did the best I could in the moment. Statistics of my performance are not pretty, but that’s not even a close representation of what God is working inside me. The gifts of insight and determination, coupled with a lowering fear to trust others for assistance, are leading to powerful changes…

Persevering through hard times is just that—hard. It can seem especially tough around the holidays when others around you appear cheerful and celebratory while inside you are dying. It’s only through the power of the Holy Spirit we have the strength to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Times of trial and/or persecution lead to opportunities to witness. (v.13) As you lean into Him who first gave you life, the Holy Spirit will give you the power to press on, to finish the race well and have life in abundance. (((Hugs)))🚦

“They watched closely and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, so they could catch Him in what He said, to hand Him over to the governor’s rule and authority…But detecting their craftiness, He said to them,”

‭‭Luke‬ ‭20:20, 23‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

One of the great lessons of social media is, “Not everyone is your friend.” Correspondingly, not everyone who speaks Christian-ese knows Jesus. This is why each morning when you get dressed you need to put on the full armor of God. In doing this, your heart and mind are protected, and you can discern truth from lies, sincerity from mockery. Get yourself dressed for spiritual success!🚦

“Every day He was teaching in the temple complex. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people were looking for a way to destroy Him, but they could not find a way to do it, because all the people were captivated by what they heard.”

‭‭Luke‬ ‭19:47-48‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

That babe in the manger certainly knew how to stir things up! His words evoked a range of emotions, from the contemptuous hate of the chief priests to adoring devotion of those forgiven of much. Are you and I as radical in our thinking and outreach as Jesus? As Christ followers we must not be afraid to share our stories of how the good news of grace and mercy has transformed us. Yes, there may be pushback from some folks, but His love draws people to Him.🚦

“Then I fell down like the first time in the presence of the Lord for 40 days and 40 nights; I did not eat bread or drink water because of all the sin you committed, doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and provoking Him to anger.”

‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭9:18‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

Moses had just come down from Mount Horeb (aka Mount Sinai) after a 40 day fast while he met with God only to find the Israelites had forged a calf image and turned away from God during this brief time away. Yet, after fasting 40 days, Moses fell down prostrate before God and fasted ANOTHER 40 days, interceding on behalf of the wayward clan, begging God to not destroy them.

I can’t help but wonder how many people there are in modern times who grieve sin so deeply as did Moses. One? Two? While I have no answer, I know this one thing is true: our sin and the sins of others is not to be taken lightly, cheapening the sacrifice of Christ.

“If My people who are called by My name humble themselves, pray and seek My face, and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.”

‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭7:14‬ ‭HCSB‬‬🚦

“May the Lord be praised, for He has wonderfully shown His faithful love to me in a city under siege. Be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭31:21, 24‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

No matter from what side of the political and social spectrum you swing, these are trying times. But in the midst of the chaos and frustration is God. He is always the same—faithful, loving, all powerful and in control. Put your hope in Him alone! What is holding you back from drawing from that divine strength and courage?🚦

“Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭62:1-2‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Have you ever noticed after a storm some trees have lost large limbs, some may even be uprooted, but others stand tall with only twigs blown from their boughs? The same wind blew through each tree, the same pounding rain. The trees most damaged received only the occasional watering from rainfall. The trees standing firm received regular watering that soaked the roots and was absorbed into the branches.

Everyone gets pounded with storms at some point. Being well-watered daily and firmly rooted in the truth God’s Word will keep you from being “greatly shaken” by the whirlwinds. Are you soaking in His Word daily?🚦

“Understand that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.”

‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭9:6‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

The land of Canaan was flowing with water, milk, and honey. Food was in abundance, and there were precious metals and minerals to mine, too. It was filled with everything good that the wilderness was not. God did not give this to this Israelites because they earned it through obedience and righteousness. God gave it to them not because of who they were but because of who He is—faithful to keep His promises, even promises made long, long ago.

You and I ought never become arrogant, thinking we have somehow earned all the blessings we have in this life. And when we wander down the path of self-pity, thinking we deserve more or better than a road of suffering and struggle, we need to stop in our ungrateful tracks and remember our sin earned for us eternal damnation in separation from God, but grace and mercy rescued us and planted us in abundant, never-ending relationship with Him.🚦

“As He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves. But He was sleeping.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭8:23-24‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

When I am inside my home with windows closed when and the Wild storm is raging outside, I have a hard time going to sleep and staying asleep. Yet, Jesus slept on the boat during a vicious storm with waves threatening to overtake the vessel.

Jesus knew He who commanded mountains to rise up from the ground and who parted the Red Sea. When we know the Creator, we know the One who really is all powerful and in control. Jesus invites us to come and find rest with Him in the midst of the storm.🚦#StoplightDevotionals

“There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. So the one who fears has not reached perfection in love. We love because He first loved us.”

1 John 4:18-19 HCSB

This year has been one of training in courage: doing hard things in the face of fear. I have not conquered fear, and I don’t even know what that would mean. But I am learning to push through the fear to move forward boldly—to have those tough conversations instead of sweeping things under the rug. Because of love, God had tough confrontations with Moses and Job faced off with his accusers. Jesus had to be afraid of the horrible torture he would endure, but He shed his own will to bear the shame and pain of the cross so that you and I could know eternal life. What hard thing do you need to step out in faith to do today? 🚦
