“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
John 13:34-35, 15:13 NIV
When we are young we think of love as a feeling, craving the excitement of that new spark. God’s Word, however, gives the picture of love as verb, not a noun. It’s the setting aside your own desires to put another’s needs and desires ahead of our own. Love is the granddaughter sweetly taking the dish towel from Nana and washing the dishes for her. It’s the husband who gently puts slippers on his wife’s feet when she can no longer bend over to put them on herself. It’s a three hour lunch with a friend who‘s life isn’t turning out as planned. This kind of love is motivated by gratefulness to God for the sacrifice of His only Son for us.
