Lessons from the Struggle Bus

I recently talked with my counselor about being stuck in a place of unwholeness. I’ve been feeling disconnected from people and less-than for a number of years since living through a traumatic season. That period is over, and victory has triumphed over tragedy, yet my emotions remain tied up in memories that haunt me on the regular. My soul cries out for respite from this prison of doubt and worry!

As I sit writing and praying, God’s word calls out, beckoning me to renew my mind. My training tells me I do this by hiding God’s word in my heart—meditating on it day and night. Healing begins when I dust off my Bible and look up scriptures about renewal:

“God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not banish me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore the joy of Your salvation to me, and give me a willing spirit.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭51‬:‭10‬-‭12‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

“The LORD is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack. He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He renews my life; He leads me along the right paths for His name’s sake.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭23‬:‭1‬-‭3‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

“but those who trust in the LORD will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not faint.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭40‬:‭31‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

“Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭2‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

Lingering with Him, waiting on Him, remaining in His presence are all keys to overcoming the inevitable hardships of life. When I stray from daily, solid time in the word and in prayer, my thought life goes off the rails. It is when I tune my heart to the Spirit I find peace. Shalom.
